Dear Editor,
Each year October 1, is observed as International Day of Older Persons, to highlight the important contribution made by the senior citizens for the betterment of societies and raise awareness about the challenges, they are facing in the old age.
International Day of Older Persons was discussed in 1990 and was observed for the first time in 1991. This year the theme is “Take a stand against Aging”. It is a challenge for everybody to consider ageism – the negative attitudes and discrimination based on age and the detrimental impact it has on older persons.
A global campaign has been launched to benefit from the experiences of older persons. Ageism is a practice, which has harmful effects on the health of adults. Ageism is a huge challenge and problem for older people who are made to think that they are a burden on their family members.
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated to provide added confidence to the senior citizens, create awareness about their valuable contribution during the prime time of their life, for the nation and the country, give them respect and recognition in the society and solve their problems on priority basis, to enable them to live a trouble-free life in a dignified manner.
These senior citizens who had given the prime days of their lives to the nation, rightly deserve special treatment by the society. All public and private hospitals, health centres, banks, public dealing offices and outlets, public parks, etc. should extend full cooperation to these elderly people and make them realise that their prime time services are still honoured and recognised by the society, the individuals, the government and everybody both in the public and private sectors.
A problem we have in Guyana is seeing older folks i.e pensioners, queuing up and waiting at post offices hungry every month from early dawn to late afternoons waiting for their pittance of a pension.
Yours faithfully
Rooplall Dudhnath
