Dear Editor,
My wife and I read this morning’s online edition with great sadness and rising trepidation as to the state of affairs in our motherland. In particular Freddie’s note on how no-one has picked up on the matter of his daughter and the small gift that she received some years ago from one of us in the Diaspora stirred me enough to return to a question I had about UG a few weeks ago.
It was about that disgraceful and nationally embarrassing debacle when the UG Law School was not allowed because of a deficient submission by Guyana. This was announced from the podium at the CLE meeting in Guyana! And widely covered in the local and international media!
By God almighty! Who at UG would have been responsible for this national disgrace and why has the nation not roundly chastised such a creature who would cause the President, legal fraternity and AG such an ignominious pain?!
More importantly that gross negligence has now dashed the hopes of hundreds of young aspiring lawyers with law degrees from UG. I followed the case and saw from the photos carried in your erstwhile pages, Editor, that not a single member from the UG law department seemed to be present at that opening of the CLE meeting in Guyana a few weeks ago.
I could not help but wonder if this was a clue as to why the Guyana submission was deemed so woefully deficient. As I pondered the case some other seriously troubling questions began to emerge. Who are the mysterious group of investors in Guyana’s Law School called “Joint Partners Investments?”
Should the people of Guyana seek to know the principals? Does any party from either the GoG or UG have interests in this entity? Could there be any serious inherent conflicts of interest concerns? Why would the University of Guyana give 20 acres of its land to this private entity when land on the campus is now said to be at a premium?
These questions and then some others which it would be improper to raise in such public letters came to me this morning again after I saw Freddie’s note about the $845 gift to his daughter. Compare this with say the gift of shares in a law school or the gift of free prime real estate and one has to agree with Freddie.
Who is asking the hard questions? Who is ensuring we get answers? Who cares?
Wake up UG Council, wake up President Granger, wake up Parliament, Wake up Guyana ! Freddie and Glenn can’t be the only two men awake in the land!
Luta. C.
