The 13th annual Buxton ‘Carl Hooper’ Cricket Club was officially launched last Wednesday and will conclude on August 19 at the Buxton ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Community development programme were Buxton Cricket Club’s President Essie Peters, East Coast Cricket Board President Bissoon Singh, President of the Golden Grove CC Alystine Haywood and Tion Abrams, WPA’s Chairman of Buxton/ Fowls NDC.
The two-week camp caters for children between the ages of 7-19 and caters for 40 participants from Buxton and Villages in close proximity to Buxton.
Sessions will include technical, practical, physical and off-the field actives and run from 09:30hrs to 15:00hrs.
Buxton CC was formed in 1993 and played in tape-ball competition before being officially launched as the Buxton ‘Carl Hooper’ Club in 2002 when Hooper was appointed West Indies Captain.
“System must be put in place for areas like the East Coast, Berbice and Georgetown which gets little or no help from the GCB and these are the only areas that set up Camps like this and these are the areas where the bulk of the national players at all levels comes from,” Singh lamented.
He told the gathering that despite the lack of support from GCB, a lot of businesses have contributed over the 13 years of the Buxton Camp and urged the participants to make use of this opportunity. He added, Peters is doing a great job for the youths in the Buxton Community.
“There are a lot of problems with the structure of cricket on the East Coast and the Black clubs are not treated in same way as the Indian Clubs by the Cricket Board,” Singh said.
Singh said an East Coast Cricket Committee was formed and has only one Black member among the 17 members, adding that nobody knows who selects the East Coast Franchise for the GCB Franchise League, while saying that Buxton’s Clive Andries is one of the best Cricketers on the East Coast but is still not being selected.
Haywood said that Golden Grove CC will hold their Cricket Camp when the Buxton Camp concludes since both clubs utilise the same resource personnel and wished this Camp all the best.
Abrams said that he agreed with all that Singh had said and as member of the Collation Party he promised Government’s commitment that all clubs on the East Coast will be treated fairly.
“When Football had its problem FIFA stepped in so why doesn’t the ICC step in here when claims that GCB is an illegal Board since I believe the CWI will not do anything about the cricket politics in Guyana’s cricket since they support each other,” the politician said.
Peters spoke about the victimization of the Buxton players, and added that he is disappointed that the members of Buxton are pulling against each other and some of them are playing in the East Coast Committee which he said was an illegal Committee and called on Government to do something about the problems with the cricket in Guyana.
