Tumor victim seeks financial help

After being diagnosed with a tumor in the head, 26-year-old Tiffany Williams of Eccles, East Bank Demerara is now seeking the public assistance with funding a life saving surgery in the United States of America (USA).
According to Michelle Henry, a relative of the ill woman, Williams who worked at the Demerara Harbour Bridge was at a family function some time last year, when she fainted and fell down a flight of stairs.
Thereafter, Williams was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where a tumor was discovered in her head following a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
According to medical documents seen by this publication, Williams is a known patient to the Neurosurgery Clinic where she was examined by two doctors. An MRI of the brain revealed irregular heterogeneous enhancing mass lesion to the right temporal region.
Doctors say that the MRI finding is consistent with diagnosis of Pilocytic Astrocytoma, a brain tumor that occurs more often in children and young adults.
Although Williams’s situation is not life threatening nor is the tumor growing rapidly, it has been affecting her nervous systems. In fact, she is partially paralyzed to the right side of her body and his dependent on her mother to carry out day-to-day activities.
She has blurred vision in one of her eyes.
“She (Williams) cannot do anything on her own. Her mother has been taking care of her and the child,” Henry related. Ever since the diagnosis, Williams was forced to leave her job due to the daily battle with excruciating headaches, numbness and blurred vision.
Speaking with this publication, Williams expressed, “I am just seeking assistance to save my life.”
She related that the cost for the operation is estimated at between US$60,000 and US$65,000, which is equivalent to between $13,000,000 and $13, 650,000.
Apart from this, she still needs funding for hospitalization, after surgery care, medication and other associated costs.
Upon visiting her yesterday, she was seen interacting with her beautiful six-year-old daughter.
Nevertheless, Williams expressed that she was doing fine.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Public Health has donated $1M in aid of funding the much needed operation.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge has also made a monetary donation towards offsetting the cost of the operation.
Her condition is getting worse each day, and according to doctors, the necessary resources for Sterostatic guided biopsy and/or tumor removal is not available in Guyana. Williams is hoping to undergo treatment at The University of Vermont Medical Center.
