Creating a political storm out of a tea cup

Dear Editor,
Just a few weeks ago the intended launching of an indigenous Political Party to represent the Amerindian Peoples of Guyana was splashed across the pages of our National media, so it is no wonder that the organizers of this conference left their homes in the Hinterland to attend this 12th sitting of the National Toshaos Council Conference to discredit the sincere efforts of the APNU/AFC Coalition.
Over the last three years the Government has engaged the leaders of the Amerindian communities through its many social, educational and economic programs geared to better the standard of living of our Amerindian brothers and sisters.
It seems as though the leaders of the NTC are out in pursuit of political power, given that this present administration has worked unceasingly to give Amerindians equal opportunity to benefit from the promised good life.
In Amerindian communities, children benefit from the availability of boats, buses, bicycles and breakfast at some schools; hinterland airstrips are upgraded and soon the Government of Guyana will provide adequate aircraft to improve transportation services out of our hinterland.
The road from Lethem to Mabura will add to the comfort of the communities, trade from the hinterland will receive tremendous boost.
The mineral rich Hinterland does not only belong to the Amerindians; it is for all Guyana. Africans were here before a few Amerindian Tribes that crossed the border approximately 200 years ago, the Indigenous Africans were already here 200-odd years before their coming.
It is the taxpayers’ money of those who live on the coastland that has been used before and after Guyana became independent in 1966 to develop Hinterland communities.
While they have been receiving Amerindian land titles, African Guyanese communities are fighting to regain those ancestral lands stolen by the colonial administration and the former PPP Government.
This Government must never bow to deceit and deception by those who seek political power by all means necessary.
They will stop at nothing to embarrass the President and the Coalition Government. Why didn’t they seek an audience with the President and his Ministers before coming to the Convention Centre to discuss those issues they raised at the opening of this much touted National Toshaos Conference. It seems as though they were ill advised.
I commend President David Arthur Granger for not responding to those baseless rants that have dampened the possibility for constructive engagements between NTC and the Government.
I am of the opinion that the NTC has gone into 2020 election mode, it seems a new opposition party is in full gear challenging to occupy the seat of political power.
