Residents of Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, are bewildered as they witness the mass deterioration of an access road that is still under construction. Based on reports reaching this publication, the access road presently under construction is already with huge potholes.
Located in Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam], about three miles northwest of Suddie, Onderneeming has a population of more than 4,000 residents and is rapidly striving towards development.
But the rapid deterioration of this road has caused much inconvenience to the residents, who claim that their vehicles are severely damaged by the huge potholes.
Kaieteur News understands that the construction on the Onderneeming access road commenced sometime during the last quarter of 2017, and should have already been completed. Works on the road was allegedly halted until the May/June rains ceased. This delay in the completion is being blamed by some for the rapid deterioration of the access road. Nevertheless, residents are still questioning the quality of construction of the road.
Residents stressed that quality is essential since the Onderneeming access road connects the Essequibo Coastland to the Onderneeming backlands and the Onderneeming sandpit. Heavy-duty trucks transporting sand and loam are thus frequent users of this roadway.
Reports on the road’s deterioration surfaced in the Region’s RDC statutory meeting last Tuesday. It was revealed by the Regional Chairman, Daveanand Ramdatt that the contract was awarded through central government by the Public Infrastructure Ministry.
Ramdatt, in a press release, said that the matter was forwarded to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, but no response was received.
Ramdatt noted; however that the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson should provide answers for this public funded project.
