– Den Amstel crush Cougars 5-0
– Ann’s Grove and Buxton settle with exciting 2-2 draw
Den Amstel Football Club is on a roll and they are enjoying playing at the National Track and Field Center at Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara. After defeating defending champions Guyana Defence Force Football Club (GDF FC) 3-0 on Friday night at the said venue, the West Side based club returned last night to make light work of bottom of the league table, Cougars Football Club.

From left, goal scorers Michael Phyll (Buxton) and Steve Francis (Ann’s Grove) tussle for possession during the opening match which drew 2-2.
All the goals in the match were banged in during the first half with Dwayne St. Kitts rifling in the first to etch his name on the score sheet in the seventh minute before being substituted in the 22nd minute of play after suffering an injury from a late challenge.
Delon Lanferman bagged a brace in the 25th and 44th minutes but was foolishly sent off in the 88th minute of the game after receiving a second yellow card for simulation.
Gideon Payne (34th) and Jamal Pereira (45th) were the other players on the score sheet for Den Amstel in the win which saw the club shoot to 23 points from 11 games played.
At the end of the game, coach of the winning side O’Neal Yearwood, noted that the reason for the lack of goals in the second half was due to fatigue on his players who were playing their second game in three games. “My players were suffering from muscular aches before the game and it got visibly worse in the second half but we are taking one game at a time and luckily we will have six days rest before we clash with Buxton On Saturday,” Yearwood explained.
In the opening match, which was an all-East Coast affair involving Ann’s Grove and Buxton United FC, both team scored two goals and had to settle for a draw. Steve Francis and Maxton Adams netted for Ann’s Grove, while Michael Phyll and Nixon Robertson found the back of the net for the ‘Buxtonians’.
The final match of the triple header between Western Tigers and Milerock FC had a score of 1-0 during the first half up to press time, the results of that match will be featured in tomorrow’s issue of Kaieteur Sport. (Calvin Chapman story and photos)
