Rape suspect, 61, “hangs” self in Leonora police cell
An investigation has been launched following the death of a prisoner in custody at the Leonora Police Station about 05:30hrs yesterday.
According to the police, the prisoner was discovered hanging from the lockups window grill. He allegedly used his shirt to commit the act.
The police disclosed that four other prisoners were in the cell.
The name of the dead man was given as Bagatram Jailall, 61, of 48 Ocean Garden, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
He was arrested Sunday for the alleged rape of a 12-year-old female.
The alleged incident, the police said, occurred at his home on Friday.
