More than five fields of Marijuana plants were destroyed by police on the Essequibo Coast yesterday, after an operation led to the discovery of a secluded camp in the Onderneeming back lands.
According to information revealed by police, ranks who were on foot patrol observed a group of men under a camp in the Onderneeming Backlands, about 10 miles from the public road.
As ranks approached the camp the men allegedly opened fire, forcing police to take evasive action.
The men then fled into the nearby bushes and were pursued by ranks on foot, leading to the arrest of one. It was further observed that there were two camps with a quantity of groceries, kitchen utensils, hammocks, clothing and dried cannabis, which weighed about 15 kg.
The camp was also surrounded by six fields which amounted to some 8 1/4 acres of Marijuana plants,. It is believed that the farm had some 11,700 marijuana plants, ranging between six inches and seven feet in height amounting to about 58,530 kgs.
The plants were all destroyed by fire. One suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations.
