Government will “soon” name a new Police Commissioner. The process has already kicked into gear, says Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan.
On Friday, the official was being questioned about the naming of a substantive Police Commissioner.
The minister had just completed handing over cheques of $100,000 each to five relatives of fishermen believed killed in attacks, in Suriname waters two months ago.
According to the minister, Parliament, through its Committee of Appointments, had to make certain decisions.
The body has submitted a list of persons to sit on the all important Police Service Commission (PSC).
The commission has to be consulted by President David Granger, according to laws, before a new police commissioner can be named. Also to be consulted is the Leader of the Opposition.
According to Ramjattan, it is important that persons chosen to the commission have some knowledge of the police force.
The Parliamentary Committee list of recommended persons was headed by Assistant Commissioner, Paul Slowe.
Also recommended were another Retired Assistant Commissioner Clinton Conway and Retired Woman Assistant Commissioners of Police, Vesta Adams and Claire Jarvis.
Once the commission is in space, the process of consultations for a new Commissioner will continue, the minister disclosed.
Interviewed earlier this year for the post were Maxine Graham, Paul Williams, Marlon Chapman, Clifton Hicken, Nigel Hoppie, current top cop (ag) David Ramnarine, Lyndon Alves and Leslie James.
Earlier this year, Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud, retired under a cloud after an inquiry into an alleged plot of assassination of President Granger found that the police force badly handled the probe.
The inquiry raised questions about Persaud who went off on leave and only returned to proceed on retirement back in February.
The police commissioner post has always been a hot button issue between Government and the Opposition, with very little agreement on a common candidate.
