A 49-year-old miner was on Friday remanded to prison after being charged with rape.
Cedric Anderson, of Corentyne Berbice appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on June 24, last, at Mazaruni, in the Essequibo Magisterial District, he sexually penetrated a 30-year-old woman, without her consent.
The matter was heard in-camera.
Police Prosecutor, Vivian Adolph, strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
He added that the virtual complainant and the defendant are known to each other. According to the prosecutor, during the commissioning of the crime, Anderson placed a cutlass to the woman’s neck.
Magistrate Latchman after listening to the prosecutor’s submission remanded the defendant to prison. The father of two will make his next court appearance on July 3, when he will appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for reassignment.
