A 46-year-old miner of 85 Section ‘C’ Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, who allegedly collected $5M from a woman by falsely pretending that he could get a murder charge instituted against her relative discharged, yesterday, made an appearance before a City Magistrate.
Richard Aulder appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where a fraud charge was read to him.
It is alleged that between September 20, 2016 and January 20, 2017 at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained $5M from Nicola Duggan, by falsely pretending that he was in a position to get the case against Robert Benn, who was charged with murdering Collin Pereira, discharged in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Aulder denied the allegation after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Keavon Bess, in an application to secure bail for his client told the court that his client is a manager of a mining company.
The lawyer argued that it is quite strange that the victim was not charged for engaging in a criminal act. He went on to tell the court that the prosecution cannot prove that any money was given to his client.
Police Prosecutor, Sanj Singh, in addressing the court stated that intense investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The court heard that the defendant admitted in a caution statement that he was given $5M worth of cocaine, instead of cash.
The prosecutor stated that defendant who is a businessman, met with the victim on several occasions and collected the money from her.
The money was to be given to the mother of Collin Pereira, as an inducement.
Prosecutor Singh had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant; hence Aulder was released on $200,000 bail.
Conditions of the bail are that he must lodge his passport with the court and report every Monday to Brickdam Police Station, until the completion of the trial.
Last year, Benn was committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Pereira, whom he allegedly shot dead on August 23, 2016.
According to reports, Pereira, called ‘Malcolm’ formerly of 213 Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was driving a heavily tinted motorcar, with his girlfriend Gail Ann Chacon, seated in front.
He attempted to turn around the vehicle, in front of the Benn’s residence. In the process, Benn who was reportedly in his yard whipped out his licensed handgun and discharged several rounds at the vehicle, hitting Benn and Chacon about their bodies.
