Just after noon, yesterday, as the children were preparing to write their annual end of term test, a fire was detected in the Computer room of Regma Primary School in Linden by an alert parent.
According to reports the parent saw the smoke, then fire, in the room and alerted a teacher with whom she was speaking.
One source said, “If we didn’t detect it early, it would have been disastrous. The whole building might have gone up in flames. Anyway, we were able to put out the flames.”
One Grade Six student who was very upset with Guyana Fire Service said that they arrived without water. It is a good thing it was not worse or else my whole school would have gone up in flames. Imagine they had to throw sand and it is a good thing the school has fire extinguishers.”
According to sources the fire was of electrical origin and it destroyed a computer and desk and a fluorescent light in the room. A box of stationery was also destroyed. No other room was damaged and the students were all safely gathered outside.
Also on the scene were the Regional Education Officer (ag) Keane Adams, the Regional PNC Party Chairman Derron Adams, and some M & TC Councillors.
