Desmond Sears is new PSC Chairman
The Private Sector Commission (PSC) yesterday at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Marriott Hotel elected Desmond Sears, Chairman. Sears served as Vice Chairman of the Commission for the last two years.
He is the President of the Shipping Association of Guyana and the Executive Director of Delmur Company Limited.
Deodat Indar was elected Vice-Chairman while Komal Singh and Zulfikar Ali were elected Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
During a speech, he gave about an hour before the new executive was elected, former Chairman, Eddie Boyer said that his main objective for 2018 is to ensure that the PSC would continue to promote prosperity and economic stability within Guyana, and to champion the Private Sector as a significant element of growth.
He said that much of the focus this year was to become prepared for the mammoth opportunities open to Guyanese businesses as the country heralds its first oil.
Boyer said that the PSC worked diligently to ensure that its members were aware of the opportunities.
He said, “We encouraged the development of the entrepreneurial skills that need to be addressed. We emphasized the importance of the local content policy, as we need to make as much use of this as possible.”
He said that he ensured that businesses received full exposure, through a number of activities including the Guyana Business Summit.
Boyer noted that the PSC also participated in GIPEX, which saw a number of Canadian based oil and gas related companies making presentations.
“We were also part of a team that went to Newfoundland, to look firsthand, at the nature of oil and gas operations. We met with ministers of the Government, members of the diplomatic communities and executives of foreign businesses, to share our thoughts and gain meaningful exposure.”
Boyer was also keen to note that the PSC demonstrated its desire to work with Government at all levels, to improve “the conditions prevailing today.”
He then took the opportunity to compliment Government on a number of its accomplishments, including local government elections, establishment of the Procurement Commission, and reduction of Corporate and Personal taxes, increase of the personal threshold and lowering the VAT percentage.”
