A father of three, who told the court that he stole a quantity of jewellery and cash from his lover to support his three daughters, was yesterday sentenced to 24 months imprisonment on a simple larceny charge.
Winston Marshall, 35, a security guard, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, and admitted to the charge which stated that between April 6 and June 17 at D’Urban Street, Georgetown, he stole a quantity of gold jewellery valued $847,000, 200,000 cash and US $300—totalling $1.1 M, property of Abena Hudson.
When asked by the Magistrate why he stole the articles, Marshall replied “I took the articles because I had bills to pay and my children to look after.” He added that he shared a relationship with the victim and he took the articles unknown to her because if he had asked she would have gotten upset.
Police Prosecutor, Arvin Moore, told the court that Marshall and Hudson are known to each other, since they shared a relationship. The court also heard that Marshall would normally visit Hudson’s home to spend time with her whenever the need arose.
The prosecutor added that last Sunday, the victim was tidying her room when she observed that the articles mentioned in the charge missing. The woman confronted Marshall and he admitted to removing the articles because he was in need of it.
As a result of what Marshall told the victim, she went and made a report at a police station and he was later arrested and taken into custody. An investigation was then carried out, and he was charged for the offence.
Before sentencing Marshall, Magistrate Latchman asked him if he wished to say anything, and he added “The little money that I had remaining I took it and give the mother of my three children because she is currently unemployed.”
The Magistrate told Marshall that she had taken into consideration his early guilty plea, the prevalence of the offence and the need to prohibit others from contemplating same; hence, she imposed the 24-month sentence.
