A man who is well-known to the authorities, and who with his friend ambushed, and raped a 13 years old boy back in 2010, has been jailed for 18 years following the presentation of a probation report.
Mahadeo Ramnarine, called “Clifton” and “Dougla”, 46, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice, was handed the sentence on Monday in the Berbice High Court by Justice Brassington Reynolds. The man was earlier found guilty on the charge of rape of child under the age of 16, but a probation report was ordered.
The Probation report highlighted that Ramnarine was the product of poor upbringing and had a mixed past. He dropped out of school at an early age.
Although he had many siblings, he was the only one born during the union of his mother and father. His parents separated early and he grew up with his grandmother and other relatives. Resident in the village had mixed views about his character. He is the father of five from different relationships.
The state’s case, which was presented by Attorney-at-law Tuanna Hardy was that on Saturday August 14, 2010 about 10:00hrs, Ramnarine raped the child.
The accused was not represented when he appeared in court. He was placed on $200,000 bail following the PI in the Magistrate Court.
At the time of the incident, the teen resided in the same village with the accused in East Canje, Berbice along with his parents and other siblings. He knew the accused and one Boyo for about six years.
On the day in questioned, he was sent in the nearby village to purchase cow milk.
When he left home, he was without shirt. On his way back, he saw the two men under a tamarind tree on a street in the village. As he was about to pass the tamarind tree, he was pulled into some bushes by Boyo.
The men promised to give him something and violently removed his clothes. He began to shout for help but was overpowered .His underwear was placed into his mouth, his hands were tied behind to his back. His feet were tied together while a white thing, which he was told was a tablet was placed into his nose.
He was then placed to lie on his abdomen after which the men held him down and took turns in raping him. During the time, he lost consciousness. When he caught himself, he was lying in the same position. He was feeling dizzy and was subsequently rescued by a woman who was in the bushes picking tamarind.
He did not find his clothes and ran home and told his mother.
The matter was reported and the teen was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was examined and it was confirmed that he was sexually assaulted.
Before passing sentence, Justice Reynolds told the accused that he was baffled by the nature of the offence.
After committing such an act, you went on with your life. You have shown no remorse. After tying up the victim, you left him in the bush probably to dispose of the body later on.
The judge told the accused that that maximum sentence for the act is life in prison. He however told Ramnarine, he would not sentence him to life in prison.
