E’bo minibus operators strike as gas prices climb

Minibus operators on the Essequibo Coast took strike action to the Anna Regina Car Park yesterday, as they protested increases in the price of gasoline.
Some 13 minibuses lined the location to send what they said was a “strong message” not only to the Government, but also to the travelling public. Since gas prices on the Coast increased over the past three weeks, bus drivers are now calling for an increase in fares.
The northern population of the coast, [Anna Regina to Charity], is dependent primarily on minibuses for long distance travel. The bus fare from Anna Regina to Charity is presently at $200, as compared to $500 via taxi. Minibus operators are now claiming, however, that in order to compensate the increase in gasoline price, the fare should be increased to $260 – some even appealing for $300. As minibus drivers decided to strike yesterday, many passengers were left no choice but to make use of the available taxis in getting back to Charity.
“We hire car and bus drivers are calling on the government to immediately reduce the price for fuel, which is presently unaffordable for most of us. The gas price raised three times already for the past three weeks, every time it raise is a 10 dollars more on a litre… the maintenance cost for vehicle is also heavy right now, so it’s more burden on us,” one operator said.
President of the Essequibo Mini Bus and Hire Car association, Mr. Mohammed Namul believes that the increase in the price of gasoline price will cripple public transportation within the region. Namul added, “due to the banning of foreign used tyres and the high cost for spares, the transportation section in Guyana is in very bad state, and now maybe this is the final blow to kill it.”
Kaieteur News was informed that an effort was made by the association to meet with the Regional Executive Officer, but they were advised that they put their concerns in writing. Drivers said that they will continue to strike for the next few days, until someone meaningfully addresses their concerns.
