Dear Editor,
There is at present a matter involving the Guyana Water Authority which is asking ‘for increases in water rates because they claim the income cannot meet their responsibilities. If I remember correctly the Finance person at the Water Authority had said if all the consumers who use the water pay up they will be able to cover costs.
It seems therefore a conflict concerning the finances. At the hearing before the Commission to grant the increases Mr. Rambo Gaskin appeared and made submissions concerning the costs and expenses, etc. But there is another matter of grave conflict. The accounts and figures are before the Court for this hearing and Mr. Gaskin seems to be tract. But how will the conflict between the financial person and the Water Authority be resolved?
A member of the Commission, Mr Maurice Solomon, who is sitting to grant the increase is himself the auditor of the finance books of the Water company. He cannot sit to hear the matter when he must have already made up his mind about the state of the finances of the company. It seems that we the citizens will be taken for a ride.
The Commission should get rid of Mr Solomon. The rules of any audit organisation will tell you that auditors must act fairly and not stretch out both hands to collect what he may be entitled to.
Thank you,
Gerry Thomas
