– ex-employee among suspects
A former mining camp employee was among seven suspects in custody last night in connection with last Friday’s attack on a Cuyuni/Mazaruni mining camp that left one man dead and a reported $30M in gold missing.
A senior police official said that the suspects were arrested in the same area where the attack occurred. No firearms or any of the stolen gold, suspected to be around 100 ounces, has been recovered.
One of the detained men is a former employee of the camp that three gunmen raided, while killing Dominican national Pedro Pablo Rosario.
The official told Kaieteur News that the suspects are to be brought to Georgetown today for further questioning.
The arrests came after police flew in reinforcements on Saturday from the Tactical Services Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department at Eve Leary.
A police release had stated that the owner of the mining camp provided “aerial support”, which resulted in additional investigators and TSU ranks being flown to the location.
A senior police official had indicated to Kaieteur News that investigators believed that the suspects were still in the area.
The source also said that the four other Brazilian miners from the camp were questioned.
Police were said to be somewhat baffled as to why the attackers chose to kill Dominican national Pedro Pablo Rosario.
Rosario was said to have been lying in a hammock when he was shot in the left side chest. There are no reports indicating that he had done anything to provoke the attackers.
The mining camp is reportedly owned by a Kitty resident.
According to reports, Rosario was relaxing in a hammock at around 02.00 hrs on Friday when the gunmen entered the camp and shot him. They then held the other employees at gunpoint before fleeing with two mats from the operation’s sluice box.
The killing occurs at a time when Government has sent security forces to the Cuyuni/Mazaruni and other areas in the wake of escalating attacks on miners and other businesses in the area.
