It has been almost six months since Dynamic Airways cancelled flights to and from the United States of America after—earlier in the year—filing for bankruptcy. The cancellations left over 600 passengers still waiting to be refunded monies paid for tickets to travel to the U.S.
Doorpatie Ramjit, 62-year-old of 22 Better Hope North, East Coast Demerara, and her sons Mark and Omar Ramjit are becoming frustrated because they have been “running up and down and no one can say exactly when the money will be refunded.”
“My mother is a pensioner and the money that had to be paid for that ticket is more than what some people work for in a month,” Omar complained. He said that he has been trying tirelessly, to speak to representatives from Dynamic Airlines and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to retrieve the money but to date he has had no redress.
Mark Ramjit bought a ticket for his mother to travel to the United States last October. The woman’s son said, because his mother had just acquired her Visitor’s Visa, he wanted his mother to travel to the US to visit friends and family, and as such, he decided to purchase a ticket for her.
Another resident from the East Coast of Demerara also complained that she, too, is being given the “royal run around” by Dynamic Airways representatives and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
“I feel like somebody want pocket the money because they just keep telling me next week; the other week and every time you go is something different,” she said.
She said that she was in the US when she got the news that her flight was canceled. She said that she had already exhausted all the cash she had travelled with, and had to be assisted by a family member who had to purchase two return tickets for her and one of her friends.
Information received from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure suggested that the Ministry is “working tirelessly to assist with the refunds.” The Public Relations Officer, Desilon Daniels, said that the Ministry, is facilitating Dynamic Airlines with the refund to affected passengers. Daniels added that the Ministry is putting the final steps in place to get the monies to the affected passengers.
The Ministry had experienced some challenges with getting the correct information and other details to facilitate the refunds, she said.
She further stated that the Ministry is in the process of trying to ensure that the proper information such as names, flight numbers and other important pertinent information given to the Ministry is correct.
As it relates to the date on which passengers will get their monies back, Daniels said: “We do not want to tell them April and we do not have the money ready to give them.” She told Kaieteur News that, if all goes well, passengers can expect to get their refunds early May.
In January, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure said that the process to access a bond for the sum US$200,000 which was lodged by Dynamic International Airways. The money, the Ministry said, will be used to refund passengers owed by Dynamic Airways.
