Eagles defeated Pepsi Sonics 63-31 on Tuesday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) to book their place in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) playoff final, for the final spot in the anticipated National Basketball Championships 2018 which is dubbed ‘Road to Mecca V’, hosted by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).
Travis Belgrave scored a game-high 22 points to lead his team to victory in their playoff semifinal, the only player in the match to reach double digits in points. With the victory, Eagles will now come against Dynas’ Ravens in tonight’s final that will see the winner gaining entry to Mecca V which will have a total of $2million in cash and prizes up for grabs.
The winners of Mecca which bounces off this Saturday will cash in on $600,000, 2nd place finishers $400,000 and 3rd $300,000, while the tournament’s MVP will walk away with a handsome $200,000, the player with the most points $100,00, most rebounds $100,000 and the most improved player $100,000 along with team and individual trophies and fan giveaways.
This tournament (Mecca) is usually contested during year-end but it was brought forward by the GABF to facilitate every active player a fair chance to gain selection to Guyana’s National Basketball squad since the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Americup 2021 Caribbean pre-qualifiers will tip of in Paramaribo, Suriname, this June. Following the conclusion of Mecca on April 28th, the top players will begin encampment for the CBC tournament.
