Rampant corruption at GGMC

Dear Editor,
Please allow a little space to comment about Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). I was overseas a few months and could not submit this letter sooner. An article you published in Kaieteur News, Wed, Jan 3, 2018, p. 17 “Miners complain of land hoarding as GGMC Director grabs 12,000 acres.” Sad to say this isn’t a new practice at the GGMC, which is a cesspool of corruption, and Commissioner Newell Dennison is clueless.
First-hand experience at GGMC is that preferential treatment is meted out to friends, families, and friends of friends over the general public. It is impossible to get assistance from the staff unless one is willing to pay for services. I know because as a miner I pay-off GGMC staff out of necessity. They cling like leeches.
An investigation should be launched into GGMC activities, not only the land deals of Director Hilbert Shields, but a campaign for the resignation of senior officials at GGMC.
Since Guyana loves to compare itself with America, Kaieteur News should lead an investigative report like that of America RICO (Racketeering Influence Corrupt Organization) not only into land allocation deals, but also how GGMC Officers could afford the vehicles they are driving versus their salaries; the homes they are building or already have; businesses they have, and heavy jewellery.
Mr. Editor, you previously indicated that there are no sacred cows. If you truly mean this, and I do believe in Kaieteur News, go after these slime-balls, and some who are all unfit for positions at GGMC. Investigate the Mines Officers’ assets and how they acquire them.
Under the PPP/C administration, GGMC was extremely corrupt, but it was still possible to get things done. Today it is so difficult that multiple visits to GGMC are necessary to accomplish what could be done in one visit.
Thanks to Attorney Chris Ram, a champion of the people, for doing what he is to expose runaway machinery at GGMC. Granger is on lip services although he means good, and Government officials on both sides are living large at the poor people expenses.
