Dear Excellency,
The following advice is given freely and with the best of intentions. Years ago I was standing on a subway platform in New York with my Father, an amazing intellect and true force of Nature in any arena, except the New York Subway apparently. He turned to a nearby Black man and asked for directions to our destination, and to my astonishment, upon receiving them, turned directly to a nearby White man and asked the same question.
All this while I worked the route out from the very obvious map on the wall. Never one to let the inexplicable go, I asked my Mother why my Father would do such a thing. It seemed incredibly rude to me at the time. Her answer was of course hilarious “your Father likes things in Black and White”.
Today’s news of Sir Paul Collier’s ‘advice’ to Cabinet on the controversial Oil Contract brought that memory flooding back, and raised the possibility that our President also likes things in “Black and White”. Sir Paul having delivered the White epistle, leaves me room to deliver the Black end of the package, so here goes.
Oil will be the main source of Power for hundreds of years to come, Coal is making a strong comeback. For all the wishes and horses, renewable energy sources remain beyond the realm of economic sense. Have no fear that our Oil will be left in the ground or seabed.
Renegotiating Contracts are not desirable actions and can indeed cause businesses to lose confidence in our trustworthiness. However I am sure the Oil Corporations understand that we were overmatched in the negotiations and would be willing to make concessions based on the National furor caused by the one-sided arrangement currently in place.
My advice is we hire a proven negotiating firm to work with our locals in the quest for an equitable Contract.
Table legislation that provides for the Death Penalty for embezzlement of Public monies by any Public Official. Make it clear, you steal from our future; you will not live to enjoy it. Do not make this retroactive as I fear your Administration and the former may suffer insurmountable losses to the hangman.
Commit to real Transparency in everything your Administration does. Let me be clear, no stealing, none, not a cent! Should you pass such Laws, I believe our nation will accrue much benefit from the Oil in the Sea. Prudent management of income and avoidance of grandiose schemes should see us continuing upon the path of Development we began in 1966.
In closing, Sir Paul Collier’s advice is colonial clap trap; do not buy into such nonsense. Plot a corruption free course for our nation’s future and be clear when informing us (The People) of your policy and actions.
Good Luck
Robin Singh
