On Thursday evening, the coastlands in Berbice and Demerara were once again hit by another shutdown.
In the aftermath, there were varying statements from the Government and then from Guyana Power and Light Inc.
On Thursday evening, a statement from the Government said that according to Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Renford Homer, there was a mini disturbance on a primary line at the Demerara/Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) in Duke Street, Kingston resulting in a total shutdown of the system.
“This subsequently led to power outages in several areas in Region Four. Currently, technicians are working expeditiously to resolve the situation. Homer anticipates that power will be restored in approximately 45 minutes in all areas while investigations continue.”
Then yesterday, this was what GPL had to say:
“Last evening, at approximately 18:33 hrs; entangled mains from a vehicular accident at Lance Gibbs and Irving Streets caused a disturbance on the F9 distribution line which triggered a shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).
At approximately 20:00 hrs, during the process of restoring power, the DBIS experienced another shutdown due to a related fault at Peter Rose Street, Queenstown.
Upon completion of remedial work, all areas within Demerara and Berbice were repowered at approximately 21:18 hrs. GPL remains cognizant of the inconvenience this interruption has caused and offers sincere apologies to our customers.”
