DEAR EDITOR,
For a very long time, I was observing how Guyanese politicians tend to make fools of Guyanese. Whenever some of the politicians are questioned about serious matters pertaining to our country, especially matters that they are obligated to explain to Guyanese, they respond by insulting the intelligence of Guyanese.
Many Guyanese people are not aware of the power they hold. Many of us allow ourselves to be manipulated by some of the influential politicians.
For many years, the election campaigns of many Guyanese politicians involve sessions of “talking down” to the Guyanese people, ridiculing their political opponents, and brazenly distancing themselves from the contributions to the hardships they helped to heap on Guyana.
I was fortunate to live and work a considerable part of my life in Black, Indian, and Amerindian communities; at one time in my life, I attended a school where there was only six Black students and about six hundred Indian students, and there was never any discord between the races; there were two Black teachers at the school, and I can honestly state that the Indian teachers were very caring, but very serious about their jobs.
I remember my immediate neighbours were Indians; my childhood friend’s father worked at the Blairmont estate, and many times Haroon and I used to “compete” for the uneaten part of his father’s lunch that was brought back home; Haroon’s mother would usually ensure that I had supper many times – even if she had to send it over to my grandmother.
I may have digressed a bit, but I wish to establish that there were many communities where the various races of Guyana lived very harmoniously; many Guyanese have allowed some of the influential politicians to sow hatred among the races. Many of us are stupid to be conned in that way.
I was fortunate to teach and counsel thousands of children of all races in Guyana; worked with all races in my other professions outside of teaching, and I have encountered honest, loving, and credible persons, whether they are PPP or PNC followers.
No matter which party is holding a political meeting, we, the voters, must commence asking the politicians pertinent questions at the meetings, instead of them “talking down to us.” We must demand that they answer our questions. We must signal that if there are no “question and answer” sessions at the meetings, we are not interested in the meetings.
For now, I ask this question – did the sugar industry commence its deterioration under the PPP governance? I would like to hear the response from any PPP official, even our honourable former President.
Of course I will ask more questions during the time leading up to the next general elections, so that I can determine how to cast my vote.
For too long we have been depending almost solely on Mr. Freddie Kissoon to show us some of the terrible abuse to our intelligence, some politicians and other influential Guyanese, have been inflicting on us.
Concerned Guyanese
