Dear Editor,
In today’s Freddie Kissoon column (Sunday, March 18, 2018), we saw the lighter side of Freddie. No fire and brimstone, no unrelenting trashing and dressing down. This time, we were introduced to the music and musicians that he loves. They happen to be my favorites too.
Whatever you may say of the man, based on his regular features, this journey into the musical side of him clearly shows us a different guy, a soul man.
Right on, bro! You sometimes wonder how such a hell raiser doesn’t go off the deep end. I bet you it is this kind of music that allows him to keep his sanity.
One song he mentioned, which has become a favorite of this daughter, is “Don’t Let Me be Misunderstood.” She prefers Santa Esmeralda’s version. She is going to eternally remember daddy for this part of his legacy.
I have heard many versions of the song, including one from the original performer Eric Burdon, live and in person. But for me the best interpretation remains Nina Simone’s. If you check in out, don’t do so via a low-res medium like YouTube. You will miss the heart and essence of the anthem.
Come to think of it, a song so good can only sound good even through a no-good medium and by a less than good singer.
Rock on, my friend.
