A 48-year-old man of Number Four Village, West Coast Berbice is now dead following an accident on the Number Five Village, Public Road yesterday.
Dead is Dwayne Schultz, while the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has been identified as a 39-year-old from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
From reports gathered, Schultz allegedly jumped into the path of the moving vehicle, bearing licence plate number PNN 3769, and was hit.
An aunt of the dead man disclosed that she saw him with a bag on his back and dressed in a pair of trousers with no shirt walking along the public road.
“I called my sister and said peep out and look your nephew with a bag on his back. Where I was standing, I couldn’t see that he was taking clothes out and throwing it in the trench, so she telling me ‘look he throwing the clothes in the trench’ and me and her now going and take it out from the trench and wash it,” the aunt recounted.
It was while she was doing that, that she heard a loud sound coming from the road.
“When we ran out, was he lying on the road.”
Relatives have said that Schultz, who would normally imbibe a lot of alcohol, was ‘acting up’ after he was denied alcohol by his relatives. He was reportedly ill for a few days, and was annoyed that his family refused to provide him with the alcohol he requested, and threatened to kill himself.
After Schultz was hit, he was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem next Monday.
Meanwhile, the driver was placed into custody and is assisting with the investigation. No alcohol was detected on the driver’s breath after a breathalyzer test was conducted by traffic ranks.
