A rural constable was shot in the back around 23:30 hrs on Friday after going to the aid of a Joint Services rank who was being attacked for wounding a beverage vendor.
The incident occurred at a Laing Avenue residence where police stated that “an unapproved entertainment activity” was being held.
According to a police release, a Joint Services lance corporal was providing security at the event when a 22-year-old from Independence Boulevard arrived with a drinks cart.
An argument broke out when the lance corporal refused to let the youth sell at the event.
The rank allegedly then chopped the youth on the left arm. An irate crowd then assaulted the joint services rank.
The rural constable, who was at the event, rescued the lance corporal and was driving away from the scene with the injured rank when someone shot him in the lower back.
The rural constable underwent surgery and is said to be in a stable condition. Police said that the wounded vendor and the joint services rank were treated but not admitted.
Police have detained the rank, whose vehicle was later removed from a trench in Laing Avenue.
