Mar 01, 2018 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter published in your newspaper on 26th February, 2018, alleging that I was convicted of trafficking in narcotics in 2014. I write this letter to you requesting that you publish it as a response to the letter mentioned.
Firstly, I am surprised that it was published without any verification of the true identity of the ‘Ian Smith’ who had been charged in 2014. At the time I was not even in the country.
This can easily be verified with my passport and other supporting documents which I plan to show you so that you may correct the misinformation carried in your paper and grant me a public apology. Just for clarity, I have no criminal conviction in or out of Guyana.
I am also concerned that no legitimate source was linked to this letter. It is my belief that the author of the letter has set out to deliberately tarnish my character, and therefore I would be grateful if your newspaper can provide his or her identity of this article to me and the Police.
I should add that the police are currently investigating the drive-by shooting of my home and car late last year. It is also not the first time that some of these allegations are being published in a daily newspaper.
The letter refers to report of the conviction of one Ian Smith who was 23 years old at the time. I am currently 39 years old.
The letter also refers to the selection process resulting in my appointment as Head of the Scrap Metal Unit of the Ministry of Business and my lack of qualifications. I wish to state that I am unaware of what took place prior to my application for the job and that I am a rounded individual with qualifications to effectively execute my functions, as well as many years of experience in the scrap metal trade.
Prior to becoming the Head of the Unit I was employed as the Procurement Manager for MMI Trading Inc. in Guyana and around the Caribbean. Before that I was the line Manager for South Carib Metal Limited, eventually becoming Deputy CEO.
The owner of South Carib Metal LTD’s was referred to as the ‘King of Scrap Metal’ in Guyana by your newspaper in 2012. My father Randolph Johnson was at one time the CEO of this company.
Regards,
Ian Smith
