Vendors to soon occupy Kumaka Market tarmac

Mayor of Mabaruma, Region One, Henry Smith recently announced that vendors of the Kumaka waterfront are soon to occupy stalls on the market tarmac. The market will facilitate 45 stalls.
Mayor Smith explained that the town council held discussions with vendors to ensure a “smooth transition” to the new facility.
“Right now, we are moving the vendors from the waterfront. We have 24 stalls – 21 big stalls, 24 small ones. We had meetings with some vendors for the smooth transition, moving them from the waterfront to occupy those stalls on the tarmac,” Mayor Smith explained.
In giving this update, the mayor indicated that the Mabaruma Town Council recognises the Kumaka market (waterfront) as “the hub, the business hub of this town.”
In this regard, the town council is also working towards solid waste management in the area.
“We have started some garbage collection there, because before garbage disposal, we saw people just throwing their stuff all over the place and that’s one of the things we have been trying to manage,” Smith said.
After Mabaruma became a town following the local government elections in 2016, the Town Council undertook a number of projects, including the rehabilitation of the market tarmac. Additionally, they have overseen the construction of bus sheds and the rehabilitation of several roads in the township.
