Sachin Singh’s 48 and 2 wickets for 10 runs, NavindraPersaud’s44 and ZakaryJodah’s 4 for 13, were the trio which blew away East Coast by 29 runs on the first day of the Demerara Under-17 inter-association tournament at Everest Cricket Club, while Georgetown crushed West Demerara by 70 runs at Zeeburg Ground on Monday.
Reduced to a 32 over a side contest due to rain, East Bank won the toss and elected to take first strike, posting 135 from their allotted overs; Shivanand Gossi was the most effective bowler, collecting three wickets, while Himnauth Dindyal and Vinod Sundar collected one wicket each.
In reply, East Coast was bowled out cheaply for 106 in 31.2 overs as Byron Bowen broke the opening stand of 28 with Lakeram Ramkisson 9 runs, the man dismissed.
Jodah began his assault, accounting for the wickets of Andrew Samaroo for 3 and Gossi 0 before Marlon Boele removed Elnathon Suhknandan for 9. Singh returned with the ball to dismiss Davanand Khemraj for 12 and Sundar 0, while Jodah took out Michael Pooran for 6 and Trevon Clarke for 4 in successive overs but it was Mohamed Jameer’s bowling that dismissed Dindyal for a composed 33 that swung the match around.
Meanwhile, in the second contest played over at the Zeeburg ground, Georgetown recorded a 70 run win as they posted 159 from their 40 overs as the match was also reduced due to rain with Tameshwar Permaul who top scored with 36, while Jerry Benjamin contributed 20 not out. Joshua Gobin 3 for 29, Andre Seepersaud 3 for 24 and Dominic Hussain 3 for 29, were the key wicket takers.
In reply, West Demerara struggled to 89 from just 27 overs with Waarova Balgobin top scoring with a patient 25 and Nicholas Rajpat scoring 18, they being the only two batsmen to get to double figures. Ronaldo Mohamed and Tredon Jones wrapped up the West Demerara team grabbing 3 for 6 in 3.3 overs and 3 for 16 in 8 overs respectively.
Over at Everest yesterday, East Coast played Georgetown, where East Coast won the toss and elected to bat first scoring a powerful 200 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs. Hemnauth Dindyal scored an impressive 59, while Andre Samaroo and Elnathan Sukhanand scored 26 runs respectively. Niron Bissu grabbed 3 for 35 in 10 overs, Ronaldo Mohamed took 2 for 42 in 10 overs, Jason Holder and Tameshwar Permaul took one wicket a piece.
In reply, Georgetown struggled to 83 all out in 33.3 overs with Ariod Trika and Garrick Persaud scoring 17 and 12 runs in that order being the only two players to reach double figures. Bowling for East Coast, Trevon Charles and Andrew Samaroo collected 3 for 9 and 11 runs respectively while Aaran Beharry supported with 2 wickets for 6 runs.
Matches continue tomorrow at GCC with East Bank verses Georgetown at GCC and East Coast verses West Demerara at Everest from 09:00 hours.
