A security guard, who was allegedly caught with cocaine hidden in a small pouch which was strapped around his waist, was yesterday charged and remanded to prison.
Fifty-year-old Collin Thompson, of Charity, Essequibo, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates Courts.
It is alleged that on January 25 at 10 Kilometer Police Outpost, he had in his possession 19 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question, Thompson was stopped by officers at the outpost. A search was conducted on his person and the cocaine was allegedly found in a pouch he had strapped around his waist.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Thompson, citing the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
After hearing the prosecutor’s objection, the defendant asked the Magistrate to grant him bail because of an illness and his constant need for medication.
The prosecutor objection was upheld by the Magistrate and Thompson was remanded to prison.
He will make his next court appearance on February 15 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Courts.
