Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman has said that while Russian bauxite company, Rusal, is making “some contribution” to Guyana, more is expected.
On Thursday, the Minister was asked about the fiscal benefits that the Government of Guyana is garnering from Rusal’s operation.
He said, “Rusal has been operating in Guyana for over a decade. It is a company that we inherited as a government. It employs about 600 people directly so it does make some contribution. Of course it could be making more but it is still making one, no doubt.”
Trotman said that there was a “setback” last year because the pit was flooded and for two months operations were stalled.
“I am reminded indeed that this year we are paying more attention to corporate social responsibility and I already earmarked a project that I intend to ask Rusal to take care of for the benefit of the Kwakwani community,” said Trotman.
While one of the benefits of Rusal stated by Trotman was employment, he also listed employment as one of the country’s main problems.
“The issues are primarily of a labouring nature and those are being addressed by the department of labour. As I said, they are making a contribution but there needs to be improvements especially in the labour relations,” said Trotman.
