In the days ahead, the workers attached to the National Agricultural Research and Extension Centre (NAREI), specifically in the Data Collection and Interpretation, and Extension Unit, will undergo training from two professionals from Cuso International.
These areas, according to NAREI are complementary and oftentimes guide informed decisions that allow the institute to function effectively.
The training of the staff is part of the VOICE Project, which is funded by the Global Affairs, Canada. The project focuses on sustainable agriculture for food security.
The experts, Simon Chibi and Jacqueline Johnson-Daley, met yesterday morning with the Dr. Oudho Homenauth, Chief Executive Officer of NAREI, for discussions about the functionality of the two experts, who are volunteers.
Chibi will be functioning as a Data Collection and Interpretation Specialist and Ms. Daley will function as an Agricultural Trainer.
Dr. Homenauth boasted at the meeting of the qualified and experience volunteers that will be working with the staff, in the respective fields.
Technical employees of NAREI, especially those with limited working experience, stand to gain significant knowledge from the duo.
Programme Manager of CUSO International, Vanessa Thompson, reminded that the overall purpose of the placement is to enhance the capacity of NAREI, to develop appropriate systems to promote balanced, diversified and sustained agricultural production.
In the area of Data Collection and Interpretation, Dr. Homenauth stressed that a very important component of agricultural research involves the interpretation of statistical data, to derive valid conclusions. He added that not many persons on staff have this skill.
He is hoping that with the help of Chibi, this would change with the planned training as well as reviewing of reports, which will be compiled by the staff.
Daley will be instrumental in developing training material and conducting field visits to monitor implementation of good agricultural practices among farmers. She will also mentor extension personnel in provision of extension services with the overall goal being to improve production and productivity, which will improve the livelihoods of the farmers and the nation’s food and nutrition security.
