A labourer will now be spending Christmas behind bars after he was remanded to prison, yesterday, by a City Magistrate for allegedly robbing two male sex workers of a phone and a motorcycle.
Michael Macey, 23, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to two robbery under-arms charges.
The first charge alleged that on December 12, last, at Croal Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun he robbed Denzil Benjamin of one cellular phone.
It was further alleged that on the same day at the same location, Macey while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Kevin McLean of motorcycle CJ 3621 valued $178,000.
Macey was not required to plead to the charges after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Richard Harris opposed to bail being granted to the accused. He said that a firearm was used in the commission of the crime and the nature and prevalence of the offense.
The court heard that the accused was positively identified by the victims after an identification parade was conducted at the Brickdam Police Station. The court also heard that the accused was arrested on Camp Street with the victim’s motorcycle.
According to information, on the day in question McLean was on his motorcycle CJ 3621 and Benjamin was the pillion rider. It was reported that the accused was in a motor-car with three other persons and they drove up behind the victims.
According to reports the accused pelted Benjamin with a water bottle. He and other male passengers in the car exited the vehicle and confronted the sex workers with guns.
It was reported that Benjamin was able to disarm one of the bandits after a scuffle.
Police on mobile patrol in the Bourda Market area responded promptly to the area where the robbery occurred and were able to arrest the accused.
A .32 pistol and five matching rounds were recovered at the scene. The Prosecutor objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the accused was remanded to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on January 26.
