The Ceremonial opening of the October 2016 Criminal session of the Berbice High Court was held on Tuesday with the usual pomp and ceremony outside the Berbice High Court building on Esplanade Road, New
Amsterdam.
The parade which included the march past was commanded by Assistant Superintendent Antonio Fredericks with Inspector Michael Newland the parade Inspector. There were two parade Sergeants in Randy Hamilton and Dexter Brandt. They led the 28-man strong contingent in an impressive display accompanied by the police drum corps.
The ranks were slick and crisp on parade.
The police contingent marched off from Police headquarters at Coburg Street and Strand before proceeding along Strand, New Amsterdam to the High Court where the parade was held.
The salute and inspection was taken by Justice Jo Ann Barlow who is presiding in the October Criminal session of the Berbice High Court.
Justice Barlow was accompanied by Justice Navendra Singh who is presiding over the civil court in Berbice. They were escorted by Divisional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner Lyndon Alves who was officiating in his first parade as Commander of the division. He was accompanied by Assistant Superintendent Elton Davidson; Officer in charge of the Guyana Prison Service in Berbice, Paul James and newly elected Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Haywood.
Accompanying the parade were Deputy Commander, Senior Superintendent Edmond Cooper; Traffic Officer Deputy Superintendent Dennis Stephen, and Sergeant Marlon O’Donoghue.
When the session was called to order Justice Barlow spoke to the jurors present. She outlined to them some of their roles and responsibilities as jurors. The judge told the potential jurors that their roles are important in the dispensation of justice. She also outlined to them some implications and consequences of not turning up for jury service.
