Since its conception in 2011, No Bra Day has been observed on October 13 in several countries around the world.
The observance of No Bra Day is meant to encourage women to “set their girls free” as a means of showing support for breast cancer survivors. The day is also observed to encourage women to carry out self-examinations, mammogram screenings, and make sure they know the signs of breast cancer.
This year, GTT has used its multimedia Pinktober Campaign to take No Bra Day one step further by getting the men involved!
On Friday, customers at GTT’s Camp and Robb Street Location were treated to a pleasant surprise when a number of male volunteers fearlessly stood in solidarity with Breast Cancer Survivors by donning pink brassieres in public!
These volunteers, included GTT’s Chief Executive Officer, Justin Nedd, as well as several well-known figures in local entertainment. There was Kerwin Bollers from Hits and Jams Entertainment, Robbie Singh from Pulse Entertainment. and local music Producer, Drew Thoven. These men also brought some extra cheer to customers by sharing out pink cupcakes in honour of Pinktober.
This gesture of “men wearing bras” on No Bra Day not only challenges gender norms, but makes a strong statement about just how important it is that everyone joins in the fight against Breast Cancer.
“It is important for men to show support for causes like this and at GTT we believe that we are in a position where we can Do More. So we are making a special effort to do more for Pinktober in an aim to raise awareness of breast cancer,” Nedd said.
Meanwhile, both Bollers and Singh gave GTT high praise for all the work it was doing in light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They stated that when they were invited to partner with the company for Pinktober, they didn’t hesitate. As such, partaking in ‘No Bra Day’ was an honour.
Andrew ‘Drew Thoven’ King admitted that while he didn’t plan to partake in the event beforehand, he was encouraged after seeing the enthusiasm of the others and recognising the symbolism of the gesture.
“As young people, we often live in our own little bubble but after being part of the Pinktober activities with GTT, I have learned so much and I have an increased amount of respect and understanding for the cause,” he said.
Meanwhile, both male and female customers could not hide their amusement while visiting this location, and while some were not so sure, others were impressed by this powerful gesture.
Several other events are slated for Pinktober including a Charity Dinner which will be held on October 17 at Palm Court as well as the big event, the GTT & Guyana Cancer Foundation 5k/10k Walk/Run on October 21!
