A pensioner who allegedly drove away with a vehicle that he sold to a friend was yesterday order to post $380,000 bail by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly after he pleaded not guilty to two simple larceny charges.
Sixty-six-year-old Desmond Chan, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, denied the charge which alleged that on August 16 at East La Penitence, Georgetown, he stole one 60 pennyweight gold chain valued $160,000 – property of Terrence Greene.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question he stole one motor van PHH 8016, worth $2.4 M, property of Blaise Bailey.
The man was represented by Attorney-at-Law Keoma Griffith. The lawyer asked that bail be granted to his client in a reasonable amount.
Police Prosecutor Richard Harris had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant, but asked that it be in a substantial amount, and that conditions be attached, since the vehicle was not recovered.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that during the month of April 2017, Bailey purchased the vehicle from the defendant; however on the day in question, the two virtual complainants were in the East La Penitence area, standing next to the vehicle chatting, when the defendant jumped into the said vehicle and drove away.
The court heard that the victims gave chase but did not catch the defendant. The matter was then reported and the defendant was arrested and when told of the offence, he denied the allegations. He was subsequently charged.
The father of three was instructed to make his next court appearance on October 27.
