Quincy Clarke, a 29-year-old mason of West La Penitence, was yesterday jailed for four years for robbing 11 employees of Qualfon who were being transported home in a minibus.
On May 12, at North East La Penitence, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, Clarke robbed 11 persons of a quantity of cellular phones, bags, make-up sets, umbrellas, water bottles, watches, jewellery and cash.
Clarke was charged with 11 counts of robbery under-arms. He was convicted on all by Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He was jailed for four years on each count. However, the prison terms will run concurrently—this means that he will only spend four years behind bars.
According to information, on the day in question, the defendant, while being in the company of others, intercepted a Qualfon bus which was transporting workers home. The bus was stopped and the occupants were told to lie on the ground. The defendant then collected their valuables.
Clarke made his first court appearance on May 15, at pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
The Police Prosecutor had objected to bail being granted to him citing the serious nature of the offence, the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts, as well as the fact that a firearm was used to commit the offence.
Before imposing the custodial sentence, Magistrate Bess said that he considered the seriousness of the offence.
Based on reports, Clarke was charged last year for a similar offence.
