Some four dozen Assistant Nurses graduated from the Patient Care programme yesterday at the Pegasus Hotel. The course began on May 15 and lasted six months. The classes were held in the Guyana Public Hospital.
Fifty people started but one student dropped out. And of the graduates two were men..
The Co-ordinator of the Programme, Sister Donette Mingo, of the Hugo Chavez centre explained that supervision was done by registered and qualified teachers at the facility. She also stated that the dress code was always in effect and persons being absent were a small percent.
Miss Collette Adams, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, stated that she requested the programme two years ago and proposed it to the now Minister of Social Protection, Miss Volda Lawrence.
She explained that the new nurses should give professional service to patients and most them will be taking up position in the health centres and other Ministry of Social Protection facility.
She also explained that it will help in capacity building and with the needs of the country. She also said that they must be a sponge and must soak up everything including the implementation of new technologies.
Mr O’Neil Atkins, acting on behalf of the Minister of Health, said that the graduates must act as a stimulus to increase the number of persons wanting to be trained in the programme.
He also stated that the minister asked that they supplement the demand for health care. They must step up the level of service given by nurses.
These assistant nurses will be distributed across the nation to facilitate the need for certified personnel in clinics and hospitals.
