The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) one week Inter school Competition got off to an enterprising start with play in the Upper Corentyne Zone.
Three schools namely- Skeldon Line Path Secondary, Skeldon High and Tagore Memorial Secondary participated in the male category. In the female category the participants were Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Sheldon High.
In the male category, Skeldon High defeated Skeldon Line Path 30-28, while Tagore won from Skeldon Line Path 30-18. In the finale, Tagore got the better of Skeldon High 25-18, 25-14.
The female category saw Skeldon Line Path winning from Skeldon High 25-22, 25-11.
The Schools have been divided into four zones which will see play on different days. The top two teams in each zone will advance to the quarter finals stage of the tournament. The quarter, semi and finals will be played on Friday 22nd at Port Mourant.
The competition was expected to continue yesterday with play in the Central Corentyne Zone at the Bush Lot Secondary School. Today action is set for the Lower Corentyne catchment area vying for supremacy at Port Mourant.
The final set of preliminary matches will be played tomorrow when the schools in the New Amsterdam/ Canje areas compete at the Berbice High School venue.
The top teams in the competition along with outstanding individual performances will be presented with trophies and other incentives compliments of the BVA and Director of Sports Christopher Jones and the National Sports Commission.
Matches will begin at 09:30 hrs each day.
The tournament is also being used to begin selection of a Guyana U18 team to represent the country ate Inter Guiana Games 2018.
