The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) recently launched an initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to teach pupils at the primary school level about the use and importance of standards.
This initiative will be a bold and timely effort to make standardisation a part of the schools’ curriculum, which will create a wider understanding of its principles and ultimately a generation that desires quality in all aspects of life.
The GNBS, like many other standard setting institutions across the globe, believes that the whole concept of standardisation can be entrenched in society’s culture and practices if the youths are introduced to the concept earlier rather than later. The education system in Guyana is structurally ideal for the transfer of such knowledge in a formalised manner.
The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has been advocating that standards be introduced in schools so as to allow students to be sufficiently educated on the benefits of standards. The ISO believes that from this initiative, there can be a transition from the early levels to higher learning and ultimately the working environment where products and services are produced and provided.
The current collaboration between the GNBS and the MOE will allow for the sensitization of pupils on the benefits of standards in daily life; increase awareness on the role of the GNBS as the National Standards Body; and increase the knowledge base of pupils in standardisation.
As a result, pupils will understand how standards facilitate interconnectivity and interoperability, product quality and consistency, and international trade and competitiveness. Pupils will also be able to see how standards make lives easier in every way.
The introduction of standards to primary schools in Guyana will commence with a pilot programme. This programme will focus on 10 selected schools in Regions Three, Four and Six. Materials will be developed and distributed to these schools for teaching in the classroom. Direct support will be provided by the GNBS to teachers, where necessary.
After the classroom awareness phase of the pilot programme, there will be inter-regional and national quiz competitions among participating schools, which will further widen the awareness of the programme and generate the kind of interest needed. The GNBS will evaluate the effectiveness of the overall initiative which will guide expansion after the pilot phase.
