Policeman charged for threatening to kill ex-lover

A Lance Corporal in the Guyana Police Force was yesterday released on $90,000 bail after he allegedly placed a firearm to the head of his ex-lover and threatened to kill her.
Thirty-six-year-old Randy Martin appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he stood before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to three charges.
The first charge alleged that between April 1 and April 18 at South Ruimveldt Park, Greater Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Cassandra Wickham. It was further alleged that between April 1 and April 13 at South Ruimveldt Park, he made use of threatening behaviour towards Wickham.
The last charge alleged that on April 17 at Kitty Seawall, he unlawfully assaulted Wickham.
The defendant denied all three charges after they were read to him by the magistrate.
Martin was represented by Attorney-at-law Lawrence Harris. The lawyer in his application to secure bail for his client told the court that his client is a serving member of the Guyana Police Force and has no previous or pending matters in any other court.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant.
Prosecutor Gonsalves told the court that the alleged victim and Martin shared a relationship which ended due to problems that existed between them.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the days mentioned in the charge, the defendant and the victim got into arguments. The prosecutor added that as a result of one of the arguments, the defendant armed himself with a gun and pointed it to the victim’s head before threatening to kill her.
Prosecutor Gonsalves went on to tell the court that the defendant held the victim by her throat and forcefully kissed her. The matter was later reported and Martin was arrested and charged.
The father of two will make his next court appearance on September 29 when he will appear before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.
