Dear Editor,
The Queen’s College (QC) Old Boys Alumni – of the “Fifties” era – mourns the transition of our dear “School-mates”, Richard Berkeley Fields (Fields, RB. – Pilgrim House, Upper Six Modern, U6M – 1957)
“Dickie” as he was fondly known at QC (which institution informed our youthful nurture) was a respected and admired Student/Prefect/Cadet Corps whose incomparable “savoir faire” was the envy of us all. He personified decorum, dignity, and presence – all of which were the hallmarks of the QC “Boy” – qualities we all sought to emulate – thus earning him Pride of Place amongst his contemporaries.
Erudite in speech, immaculate in attire and with a penchant for scholarship, Dickie was also an accomplished athlete and it was gratifying to watch him float effortlessly over the hurdles at our annual school sports – invariably leaving the other competitors in his wake.
There are not many of us of that epoch left in Guyana but I am positive, with the passing of Dickie, that the indissoluble bond which exists among “QC Old Boys” will resonate amongst the likes of Herman Rohlehr, Terry Fletcher, John and Harcourt Browman, Yussuff Sankar, Leslie Chin, Fitz McLean, “Gussie” Lee, Jeff and Peter Fraser, Tommy Payne, Tom Dalgetty, Rupert Roopnaraine, Kelly Saul, “Chico” Beharry, “Gooby” McGowan, John Yates, Lennox Applewaite, Steve Backer, Owen Edwards, David Granger, Noel Holder, Desmond Roberts, Ron Robinson, Joe Singh, Roger Luncheon, Carlton James, “Celly” Pinkerton, Colin Cholmondeley, Denis Niles, Pat Woolford, Norbert Grant, Gladstone Mitchell, John Worrell, David Klautky, Donald Trotman et al. Let us be consoled by recalling the adage that “to live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die” We pray for the repose of his soul.
