A security guard was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly having 19 grams of marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Thirty-three-year-old Griffith Millington of Campbellville Housing Scheme appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he denied the charge which alleged that on August 25 at Tucville Squatting Area, he had in his possession 19 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
The unrepresented defendant told the court that on the day in question he was at a house in the process of cutting his hair when the police conducted a search in the said compound and found the narcotics under the house
“Madam yuh see how I well dress. I went to get a haircut, look at my head, I get a half hair cut because the police came and arrested me. They search me and did not find anything on me. Yuh see I stand up here I well dress the night when they arrested me, was the same night when I was to go out and party.”
However, the facts presented by the Prosecutor stated that on the day in question around 17:30 hrs, police officers while on an exercise went to Lot 99 Campbellville Housing Scheme where they made contact with Millington.
The court heard that a search was conducted on him and the narcotics were found concealed in clear Ziploc bags in his pants crotch.
The prosecutor told the court that the packages were opened in his presence and he was arrested and take to the station where he was told of the offence committed, and he denied the allegation.
Prosecutor Gonsalves objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature and prevalence of the offence.
The prosecutor also outlined the fact that Millington’s version of what transpired was totally different from that of the prosecution and if granted bail, it’s likely that he would not return to court for the trial.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison.
Millington will make his next court appearance on September 18.
