Dear Editor,
It is old news now that the world is becoming more aware of the benefits of eating healthy and exercising. It is fast catching on in Guyana, evidenced by the growth of a number of gyms and the number of persons seen daily at the National Park and on the seawalls in Georgetown. There are literally thousands of persons living on the East Bank Demerara who are yearning for recreational areas that are safe to jog or simply walk.
At Peter’s Hall, in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, daily one can see persons navigating the treacherous roads, as part of their daily exercise routines. With the pavement uneven, and minibuses and other vehicles jostling for space, the situation is an extremely dangerous one. As a developing country, we have to continually keep thinking out of the box to find solutions for issues that are cropping up.
Over the last weekend, Guyana hosted a number of cricket matches for CPL was heavily attended. Other than the infrequent hosting of cricket and shows, the stadium has remained largely out of use. There is a paved tarmac outside the stadium that could be ideal for persons who may wish to exercise. The stadium proper has gates so there could be no worry about the integrity of the premises being compromised.
There is security there to enter the stadium, lending to an atmosphere of safety for persons who may want to capitalize on the convenience of using the tarmac. As a businessman, I want to urge the powers that be to open the tarmac, even encouraging vendors who may want to dispense health foods, including juices. There will, of course, be no allowance for alcohol and cigarettes. There are possibilities here.
I humbly suggest that the tarmac area be opened between 5-8am and 5-8pm.I am more than willing to even lend some of my resources to help in this initiative. I am an integral part of the policing community group, at Providence, so we can lend some assistance for security. These are ideas that we need to move on pronto. My number is 626-8918, and I remain available for any support that I can assist with.
