The $21.8M Woolford Avenue sidewalk project is set for completion by September, just in time for the new school term.
This was revealed in an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) by
the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) Senior Projects Engineer, Kester Hinds.
Hinds said that the project which began in May is approximately 85 percent completed.
The aim of the project is “to improve road safety in the zone of Albert Street to Camp Street, in Woolford Avenue.”
Woolford Avenue, home to several schools and organizations in that zone, including the Government Technical Institute (GTI), Central Islamic Organization Of Guyana (CIOG), North Georgetown Secondary, Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC), Critchlow Labour College, Richard Ishmael Secondary School, Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) and the National Racquet Centre, is particularly busy during the morning hours when students and persons are going to and from school and work, especially after school hours in the afternoon.
The contract for the Woolford Avenue sidewalk project between the said zones was awarded to Compustruct Engineering Incorporated.
The sideways/pavements will see a reduction in pedestrians walking along the roadway, and by extension a smooth flow of traffic, the Senior Projects Engineer noted.
In 2016 the Ministry had constructed sidewalks from Vlissengen Road to Albert Street in Woolford Avenue, a zone that also boasts educational institutions including North Georgetown Secondary, Tutorial High, St. Joseph High School, Critchlow Labour College and Texila University.
Earlier this year, Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s Permanent Secretary, Geoffrey Vaughn (formerly Works Services Group’s Coordinator) had indicated that millions of dollars were being spent for the placement of road safety signs and other measures across the country to ensure that the road laws are observed and lives are saved.
