Six children and two adults sustained serious injuries after the minibus they were
travelling in reportedly slammed into a lorry along the Number 19 Public Road on Thursday night.
The driver of the minibus was said to be intoxicated at the time of the accident.
Kaieteur News understands that the minibus, travelling at a fast rate from New Amsterdam Public Hospital, ran into a heavy duty machinery vehicle along the Number 19 Public Road.
The persons were all rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and some were transferred to GPHC.
One of the injured passengers, Mohamed Shafraz Khairoodin, 43, recounted that as they were heading back from the hospital, he noticed a vehicle coming in the opposite direction, “I saw a vehicle coming and the light was bright and it blam into the bus”. He could not recall what type of vehicle hit the bus, but explained that it slammed into the bus, with him absorbing most of the impact.
The bus, he stated, came to an abrupt halt after being hit. He said that he left their home at Hampshire, Topu, Corentyne Berbice at approximately 17:00 hrs to take his wife Chitrani Narain, 44 for medical attention at the Institution and it was while they were returning home sometime around 19:30 hrs that the accident occurred.
Khairoodin told this publication that his four children Neesha, 13, Fazila, 10, Shairada, 8 and Fardeen, 5, were in the minibus with him and wife at the time of the accident. His 13 and 10-year-olds both sustained broken legs. His five year old did not receive any injuries, but the 8-year-old remains a patient at the GPHC with a fractured skull.
Khairoodin’s stepdaughter was also in the minibus, but escaped unhurt.
Ryan Garib, 10, sustained a broken right leg while his siblings Shakti Garib, 9, and Neelam Garib, 7, received minor injuries. They were treated and sent away. Also injured was Dinesh Loknauth. His two children, Yashti Loknauth, 3, and Keshan Loknauth, 5, escaped without injuries. There were fourteen persons inside the minibus.
Meanwhile, according to a police press release the motor lorry GLL 8959 with trailer TSS 458, was proceeding east along the northern carriageway, while mini bus BNN 9791 with passengers, was in the rear, proceeding in the said direction, when it was alleged that the mini bus in attempting to overtake the lorry and trailer, collided with the rear of the trailer which was said to be unlighted.
Breathalyzer tests were administered to both drivers and while the driver of the lorry who hails from Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice, was not found to have any alcohol on his breath, the driver of the mini bus was found to be above the legal limit.
An investigation is in progress.
