Father of five killed in Mahaicony accident

Dead: Winston Small

A father of five was killed and three persons are hospitalized following an accident late Sunday afternoon on the Catherine Village, Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara. The accident occurred around 17:30 hrs.
The dead pedestrian has been identified as 53-year-old Winston Small, a labourer of Lot 2 Catherine Village. He was pronounced dead at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital.
Small’s friend, 43-year-old Lawrence Semple of Catherine Village was also injured in the accident and is hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital in a stable condition.
Thirteen-year-old Jaden Alleyne of Calcutta, Mahaicony was struck off his bicycle and was transferred to the same hospital where he was treated and sent away.
The Guyana Police Force in a release said that investigations revealed that the vehicle, bearing registration number, PWW 1614, was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Public Road while Small, Lawrence and Alleyne were heading in the opposite direction.
It was further revealed that the driver, a police constable identified as Jarren Huntley, reportedly swerved to avoid an uneven patch on the road and first collided with the teenager after which, he lost control of the car and struck down the two friends.
The vehicle then ended up in a church yard. The three occupants in the policeman’s vehicle, Delroy Hutson, 35; Fitzroy Goodridge, 23 and Odari Reynolds, 23 were all treated at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and sent away.
The policeman was taken to the Georgetown Hospital where he remains a patient.
Yesterday, Margot Small, a sister of the deceased, said that she was on her verandah when her brother and his friend walked past.
“I was looking in the direction they were going and I just see this li’l boy and his bicycle pitch in the air and the vehicle ended up in the church yard, and after I didn’t see my brother on the road, I start holler and tell them (persons close to the scene) to look for Winston,” the woman related.
She further noted that she rushed to the scene and saw her brother’s body in a drain while his friend was lying close to the trench.
“His body folded up neatly in that drain,” she noted, while adding that the occupants of the vehicle were also injured.
The injured persons were all rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where Small was pronounced dead.
Investigations are still ongoing.
