The fire which claimed the life of 55-year-old Meena Sookoo is believed to have been set deliberately by the woman who neighbours deemed as an “alcoholic”.
Persons close to the woman have heard her on many occasions saying that she would burn the house down.
The mother of nine perished on Sunday evening in her Enterprise Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara home when fire destroyed her wooden home.
Reports are that around 15:00hrs, residents heard Sookoo screaming for help, they recalled seeing the woman sitting on the step of her home with what appeared to be beer bottle. Soon after, they heard her cries for help and saw the house engulfed in flames.
The woman’s daughter, Bibi (only name given) said that she last spoke with her mother last Tuesday when the woman visited the grand children. Bibi said that her mother was “alcoholic”, that “she does drink hard.”
The woman added that her mother was diagnosed with high cholesterol and hypertension and that she recently started ‘tekking’ on the sickness.
Meanwhile the victim’s husband who is in police custody assisting with the investigation said that he was not at home when the fire started.
